The Bu$ine$$ of Illu$tration: Books

The Bu$ine$$ of Illu$tration: Books

"Book publishers offer a considerable market for jacket designs (in the case of paperback books, cover designs), illustrations, and artwork for their advertising," wrote Fred C. Rodewald in the October 1954 issue of American Artist magazine.

"Prices vary somewhat with different publishers. One practice that may cause an artist trouble is that of offering an over-all fixed price for a jacket or book illustration regardless of its complexity or the amount of preliminary work required."

"There is considerable prestige and publicity in bookjacket and book-illustration work, particularly the latter, because the title page of the book gives credit to the artist. Artists should always sign jackets, and many publishers repeat the artist's name on the jacket's inside flap."

Recently, Mitchell Hooks explained to us that paperback covers went for about $300 when he began doing them in the early 50's and that as a member of the Graphic Artists Guild he worked to encourage publishers to pay better rates. After a few years, the average cover was going for $800.

Harry Borgman, who painted the cover below, told me the following from his own experience illustrating book covers:

"I did a few paperbacks from 1965 to 1973, probably a total of 12 or 15. For most of them I was paid $900, the first ones were a bit lower."

This is not an area I have any experience with, so I asked my friend René Milot how much he has been paid in recent years for book covers. René tells me that he has received as much as $5,000 for a cover from a major publisher... but that price has actually dropped in the last few years. $2,500 to $3,500 is now more typical, as publishers, like all purveyors of 'analog' media, struggle with diminished markets in a digital world. Still, compared to other traditional areas of illustration, I'd say that not only do books remain a safe-haven for literal, painterly illustrators, they also seem to pay relatively well.

Children's book publishing is another market that seems to continue to provide opportunities for the artist. While financial success in children's books can be hit-and-miss, those shortcomings might be offset by the potential for personal expression and artistic experimentation.

Rodewald writes, "Very frequently, especially in the case of children's books, a publisher will offer the artist a share of the royalties on the book. A contract also provides for an advance against royalties ranging from a few to several hundred dollars, depending on the estimated sales of the book."

"The royalty is based on a percentage of the wholesale price of the book, and of this the artist will get his percentage, which varies depending on the arrangement between the author and artist. Sometimes, when the art work in a children's book is as essential as the text, the artist is viewed as a collaborator, and the royalty rate is split between artist and author on equal or near equal terms."

"The rates of royalties in book work, as well as flat fees, differ widely from case to case, and each must be judged on its merits."

*Once again I must sing the praises of 5m@5hYdez, whose paperback cover archives are a visual feast the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else on the internet.

* Thanks also to Harry Borgman and René Milot for providing information for this post.

Bringing diabetes to light

There is a growing consensus to raise awareness about diabetes in the 50 days leading up to World Diabetes Day on 14 November 2008. The International Diabetes Federation announced that the theme for this year's campaign is "Diabetes in Children and Adolescents."

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases to affect children. It can strike children of any age, even toddlers and babies. Every day more than 200 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, requiring them to take multiple daily insulin shots and monitor the glucose levels in their blood. It is increasing at a rate of 3% each year among children and rising even faster in pre-school children at a rate of 5% per year. Over 70,000 children a year under the age of 15 get diabetes.

"If not detected early enough in a child, diabetes can be fatal or result in serious brain damage. The obvious warning signs of increased urination, increased thirst, weight loss and tiredness are at times completely overlooked and the disease is misdiagnosed as the flu or not diagnosed at all" said Professor (Dr) Rama Kant, who heads the Diabetic Foot clinic at Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University and is a senior consultant at Gandhi Memorial & Associated Hospitals in Lucknow, India.

"Every parent, school teacher, school nurse, doctor and anyone involved in the care of children should be familiar with the warning signs and alert to the diabetes threat," said Dr Martin Silink, President of the International Diabetes Federation. "Children who are not diagnosed or misdiagnosed can die from DKA (diabetic coma). In the developing world insulin is not reaching many children who need it and the children are dying. The International Diabetes Federation is advocating that access to appropriate medication and care should be a right for a child with diabetes and not a privilege."

World Diabetes Day made a global splash last year, organizing the lighting of several of the world's most recognizable monuments in blue. For 2008 the Federation is reaching out to the global community for their ideas on how to raise awareness.

"There are activities planned worldwide. We hope to have them all listed on the World Diabetes Day website," said Campaign Director Phil Riley. "We're encouraging people to join in with activities in their community and contact us with their ideas."

Countries like India have an estimated 34 to 35 million of people suffering from diabetes, which is the highest in the world. The prevalence of Diabetes in urban population is 17% and in rural it is 2.5%. This indicates impact of life style and nutritional habits. Among the chronic complications of diabetes, diabetic foot is the most devastating complication and is the leading cause of leg amputation among diabetics. It is estimated that in India alone about 50,000 legs are amputated every year, of which almost 75 percent are potentially preventable, said Professor (Dr) Rama Kant.

This problem is further compounded by the lack of awareness, practice of barefoot walking, home surgery, faulty footwear (slippers) and delay in reporting. The cost, both in terms of human health as well as economic burden of the foot ulcer treatment and complication is very high. In countries like Thailand or India, foot care is very critical as a significant majority of the population stays in rural areas. Therefore prevention of ulcer and its subsequent complications is of utmost importance, stressed Professor Kant.

Recent trends are focusing on prevention by life style modifications, adequate control, multi-speciality treatments and aggressive debridements, open traditional and endovascular surgery, use of stents for improving circulation followed by free use of latest dressing techniques, use of different growth factors, off-loading of pressure points, use of modified shoes and also occasional use of boot therapy or modified boot therapy with a special equipments, said Professor Kant.

Let us hope that the 50 days awareness raising campaign in lead up to the World Diabetes Day this year will be effective in bringing down the incidence in times to come.

How to get cash for your gold...Easy and almost instant

Are you interested in selling old gold jewelry? Would you like to get cash for gold that you are no longer using? You are not alone!

With fuel prices and grocery prices approaching record highs, many people find themselves looking for ways to make extra cash. Selling gold jewelry and scrap gold is an excellent way to make money from used jewelry and even dental scrap that may be collecting dust in your home!

If you are new to selling gold, or haven’t sold old gold in several years, you may be surprised to find how valuable your scrap gold is in today’s market. You may also find yourself surprised by how many different ways there are to get cash for gold, and how easy it can be to sell gold.

Before you get started, you will want to determine how much your old gold jewelry and scrap gold are worth. Check online auction sites like ebay to see what similar used jewelry and scrap gold are selling for, but be aware than unless your jewelry is rare or of extremely high value, you may be disappointed to see how much similar items are selling for.

If your old gold jewelry is of high initial value, you may wish to have it appraised. Try a local jewelry store, particularly one that specializes in used jewelry and old gold jewelry. This appraisal can help you determine how much your old gold jewelry and scrap gold is worth. However, be aware that unless the appraiser is interested in buying your gold, you will have to pay a fee for the appraisal.

After you have researched what your scrap gold and used jewelry are selling for, consider contacting ab online gold buyer like GoldPaq. We are here to give you cash for gold and can assist you by taking used jewelry, scrap gold, and other old gold items and recycling them. You can also ask trusted friends or acquaintances who have sold their old gold jewelry and scrap gold to recommend buyers who offer cash for gold jewelry and scrap gold.

You may also want to contact local pawnshops, who are often interested in selling gold, and therefore offer cash for gold jewelry, used jewelry, school rings, and scrap gold. Local pawn shops have many pitfalls. To be assured that you are dealing with a reputable buyer who will give you your money’s worth for your old gold, contact the Better Business Bureau to see if the business to whom are you interested in selling gold to is a member. Also bring a friend since pawn shops are often in dangerous neighborhoods. You may not want to risk bringing your gold to these dangerous neighborhoods.

Having trouble finding a local buyer who offers cash for gold? Unhappy with the experience of selling gold to local buyers? Want to sell gold in a confidential setting? Consider selling your scrap gold to an online buyer! Online buyers offer you the convenience of selling gold in a discreet manner that allows you to receive cash for your gold in the comfort of your own home. In addition, many online gold buyers, unlike jewelry stores and pawnshops, are interested only in buying old gold, rather than gemstones or other items, and are therefore more knowledgeable about the market. You may also find that they offer you considerably more cash for your gold.

How does working with an online buyer of scrap gold work? Online gold buyers will send you what’s commonly known as a “gold kit,” or insured envelope in which you place your old gold jewelry, used jewelry, school rings, dental gold scrap, and other gold scrap in in order to safely mail it. Once the online gold buyer receives your gold kit, he or she will then appraise your scrap gold and make an offer for your gold.

You may wonder how online gold buyers will process your payment for your scrap gold. Online gold buyers will offer you several options for turning your gold into cash. Many will allow you to receive cash for your scrap gold through secure payment methods such as Western Union or other online methods. If the amount of old gold jewelry and gold scrap you offer for sale is larger, the buyer may opt to pay you by bank wire transfer or company check.

Selling gold is a great way to turn used jewelry and gold scrap into cash. Give it a try!

Custom Logo Design - Branding Tips For The Business Owner

Many business owners ignore the subject of branding simply because it's an elusive subject that is hard to grasp. The understanding is that branding cannot be seen or touched, and therefore cannot be measured. But this is certainly not true, as you shall see later. First, let's explore a little bit more about branding and see what it really is.

Branding, no doubt, is just a concept. It's a concept about superior quality. And this depends heavily on perception. A successful brand means that when someone thinks of a product of service, they will immediately think of all the commodities associated with a certain brand. For instance, what brands do you think of when you feel like eating cheese? Are there any good brands, and not so good brands that come to your mind? You get the idea. But what really shapes this perception? Is the product really of higher quality? In reality, that may or may not be true. Of course, successful business owners know that for a brand to be successful long term, its products have to be of superior quality. But when we are speaking strictly in terms of perception, the quality in reality doesn't really matter. What matters is the perception of the customer. If a person thinks that it's a superior brand, he or she will buy the product or service. That leads to revenue, and it's the desired end result that all businesses want. But before that result is achieved, what actually helps to shape the perception of the consumers?

Anything that the consumer sees, hears, or touches with will affect the brand. For example, if a consumer sees a professionally designed website, he or she may form some kind of impression about the company and the product or services that it delivers. Whether its a good impression or a bad impression depends on the quality of the website. And the website is just one example. The consumer comes in contact with many forms of physical items such as receipts, invoices, stationery, etc. Some may appear to be minor items on the surface, but when a consumer is exposed to these items constantly, each and every experience will help shape the impression that the consumer has on the company. And a successful brand is built upon countless contacts with the consumers through these different means, so much so that even on a subconscious level, the consumer remembers the company as an entity that offers truly quality products and services.

To give a more specific example, consider the company logo. This is an image that appears to the consumer more often than anything else. You see it on minor items such as invoices, stationery, posters, and you see them in major advertising campaigns. Consumers are bombarded with logos, and they start to form impressions about the company. So are you starting to see what this is going? Do you now realize the importance of a company logo?

Differentiate your business from your competitors. And reflect these differences in your logo. That is truly powerful branding at work.

Getting Cheaper Car Insurance Using an Online Quote Service

Are you looking to renew your car insurance? If you are, perhaps you should consider sourcing for cheaper car insurance quotes online. There are many benefits in doing so, which we will go into later in this article. But first, let's examine the traditional process of selecting car insurance.

Before the days of the World Wide Web, buying car insurance was a tedious and cumbersome process. First, you had to get a list of car insurance service providers. And from this list, you then had to contact them one by one and go over the same basic criteria, such as driver and car details. This was usually done over the phone or by fax.

Once they had the details, they would then get back to you on the pricing, this could be hours or even days later. Only then would you start comparing the prices and choose the service provider that offered the best car insurance deal for your needs.

Most people simply don't have the time to sit down and go through such a cumbersome and time consuming process anymore. Imagine having to contact over fifty car insurance suppliers to request quotes! What a waste of time. So most just contact two or three, and make do with the best from those two or three. The end result is that they fail to capitalize on the best car insurance deals in the market.

Fortunately, all that has now changed. With the evolution of the Internet, many websites have been developed as web applications to offer car insurance quotes. These websites have a wide network of car insurance suppliers in their database, and they are able to furnish quotations in a timely manner with just a few simple clicks. These sites save you the trouble from having to source individual quotations from many car insurance suppliers. From a single point of contact, you can now source many different quotations, all at the same time. The end result is that you get all the critical information in a matter of minutes.

In fact, car insurance suppliers actually prefer you to request quotations online. Online quotations lead to tremendous cost savings for the car suppliers due to reduced administrative and labor costs. There is no need for call centers to deal with telephone quotes. Often, they pass on these savings to consumers in the form of discounts. These discounts are meant to encourage consumers to request quotations online whenever possible. The whole buying process is streamlined, much easier, and hassle free.

Finally, when visiting a car insurance quote website, remember to prepare the necessary information required. The basic information that is usually required will be your name, contact details, age, driving record, and make and model of your car. So be prepared to provide these details upon request, and get your discounted quotes in just a few minutes.

Foreign Exchange - Forex

The foreign exchange (currency or forex or FX) market exists wherever one currency is traded for another It is by far the largest financial market in the world, and includes trading between large banks, central banks, currency speculators, multinational corporations, governments, and other financial markets and institutions The average daily trade in the global forex markets currently exceeds US$ 2–25 trillion Retail traders (individuals) are a small fraction of this market and may only participate indirectly through brokers or banks.

What Is Forex Trading? Is It Right For Me?

What Is Forex Trading? Is It Right For Me?

Foreign Currency Exchange (FOREX) Trading is an exhilarating way to trade foreign currency in a market that runs 24 hours a day, five days a week. The Forex market is also the most volatile financial market in the world. It doesn’t have a physical location, trading floor or central exchange like the NYSE or futures market does, but instead it functions and operates amid a global network of banks with trades taking place over an electronic network or by phone. With its nearly nonstop currency market where Forex brokers trade in the currencies of the world, profits are made or lost depending on how various nations’ currencies increase or decrease relative to each other. Current, real time events can influence currency prices and thus Forex trading brokers typically keep track of worldwide events on a minute by minute, hour by hour basis each day.

Even though Forex trading is volatile, there are many things to like about it. Since the Forex Trading System is open 24 hours a day, the majority of each week, it allows for ample time and numerous trading opportunities around the clock. This means Forex Brokers are not under as much pressure to initiate a trade as quickly as if they were playing the stock market. Also, since world government currencies are very liquid, they are much easier to trade than other securities. As with the stock and option markets, profits can be made either way, whether in a rising or falling market. And since Foreign Currency Trading is volatile by nature, it can afford even more profit opportunities than other markets.

Of course a person’s Forex Trading Strategy should be to profit from the movement in currency values. As with any financial market, the more times a person “gets it right”, the more money they will make. In Forex or FX Trading, currency pairs are always used. FX Traders will try to determine, for instance, if the U.S. Dollar will rise in value over the British Pound, or vice versa. This is called a Currency Pair. Another trader may have some Forex information that informs them that the Euro will increase in value against the Dollar. They would then pay X amount of Dollars for X amount of Euros. As time went on and the Euro did strengthen against the Dollar then they could sell the Euros for even more Dollars than they had invested originally. Foreign Currency Exchange is essentially the simultaneous buying of one currency and the selling of another.

There is no doubt that the Forex Currency Trading System is unique. It has its own set of rules and opportunities. It can be as fast moving or slow as a trader would like. A big advantage is the number of hours in a week that a trader can place and execute trades. It can be volatile just as with any market. If a person studies their options and does their homework, a great deal of profit making opportunities exists in Foreign Currency Trading. As with any financial markets, a good Forex Trading Strategy will go a long way in determining what kind of profits you will make.

The Foreign Currency Exchange Market - What Is It All About?

Forex 101 - Foreign Currency Exchange Trading

Nearly everyone enjoys making money. More often than not, the more money we make the better we feel and the more confidence we have. These are good things as long as making money doesn’t get too emotional. If investing is treated like a business and most of the emotion is left behind, many people can do well with their investments.

Forex Trading, also known as FX Trading is another way you can make money in a trading environment. Everyone has heard of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), each featuring either stock trading or options and futures trading. Forex Trading involves the buying and selling of currencies instead of stocks, bonds, options or futures. It is also different in that there is no physical floor or exchange area like there is in New York or Chicago where the above mentioned exchanges are located. The Foreign Exchange Market (FOREX) can only be accessed by phone or by electronic network. The advantage of not having a central location, but instead having an electronic network, is that the Forex can operate 24 hours a day. In fact, it is open for trading all day and night during work days, roughly 5 days a week.

Since the Spot Forex Market is the largest financial market in the world, it is also the most liquid. This means it is easy to get in and out of a position whenever you want. The more liquid a market is, the easier it is to initiate and fulfill a transaction. Of course, the objective when trading in any market is to buy low and sell high. With Online Forex Trading, a person buys and sells the currencies of other nations. If one believes the U.S. Dollar will strengthen against the EURO, for instance, they can buy Dollars now and sell them later at a profit. Currencies are traded in currency pairs and each currency is represented by a 3 letter code. Therefore, a rate, which consists of a pair of currency codes, will end up being a 6 letter code. For instance, USD/GBP is considered a currency pair with each containing three letters for a total of 6 in a rate.

Your objective as a Forex trader is to make sure you can correctly identify the current trend in the currencies you are trading and to make sure you are buying a currency which is appreciating in value and selling a currency which is depreciating. Slightly different than stock trading, you will utilize special software programs which allow you to participate in Online Forex Trading. You can also participate in Forex Trading Education at many Forex Trading company websites, and some allow you to test your Forex Trading Strategy in a “practice mode” before you actually use your own money.

Forex or FX Currency Trading can be an exciting alternative to the stock, bond, option or precious metals markets. To some it is a simpler way to trade and profit. To others it is a welcome break from disappointing corporate news that can drive a stock down dramatically in seconds. Whatever your reasons, Forex Trading may be just the break you need from other investments you may be tiring of

Make Money Online

Wow! It’s already September, “Where did the year go?” Ok, the year isn’t over, but it’s getting there.

Anyway, the past couple of weeks have been very up and down. I have had car troubles (twice), birthday parties, etc. Our friend Mareike from Germany is visiting this month (came in on Monday), which is great, but has added to the craziness. Suffice it to say things have been really crazy. As you can imagine, I haven’t done my normal amount of online reading the last two-three weeks. Here are some of the Internet marketing/online business articles that I have read recently and thought you would enjoy:

Knowing When To Slow Down
This is such an important thing to remember. I almost always link to articles that I come across that emphasize this point.

Knowing When to Work Like a Dog and Go For Broke!
Wendy offers a nice counter point to the previous article by Dawud. Be sure to read all the way to the end of the post where Wendy reveals that she will be making a big announcement about a secret project she has been working on.

Creating A Quick HTML Sitemap To Increase Crawlability
Court writes about a really useful wordpress plug-in that I am definitely going to install in the next couple of weeks. It should help a little with the Search Rankings for this blog.

That was it for this week’s Internet marketing tips from the web.

My Vegetarian Recipe Of The Day(Comment for more)

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks– Six Layer Dip

This is a slightly updated version of 7 layer dip from Food Network. It’s slightly more complicated but still pretty easy. My mother-in-law actually heats 7 Layer Dip in the oven to melt the cheese and serves it with rice as a tasty main dish. You could also layer these ingredients over chips and pop them in the oven to make tasty nachos.

Six Layer Dip

2 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1(15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 cups lowfat shredded Cheddar
2 ripe avocados, preferably Hass
1 jalapeno, stemmed, finely chopped, (with seeds for more heat)
2 cups chopped romaine lettuce
1 1/2 cups nonfat yogurt, preferably Greek
1/2 cup fresh cilantro, leaves and some stems, roughly chopped, plus more for garnish
3 ripe medium tomatoes, diced
5 scallions (white and green), thinly sliced
Baked tortilla chips, for dipping

On a cutting board, smash the garlic cloves, sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of the salt, and, with the flat side of a large knife, mash and smear the mixture to a coarse paste. Put the garlic, beans, chili powder, water, and olive oil in the bowl of a food processor and blend until smooth. Spread in the bottom of a 2 quart casserole or gratin dish, or in individual sized dishes, as desired.Scatter the cheese over the beans. Halve and seed the avocados, then mash with the jalapeno and another teaspoon of salt in a small bowl. Spread a layer of the avocado over the cheese, and then scatter the lettuce on top.

Mix the yogurt with the cilantro and then spread over the lettuce. Add a layer of tomatoes and finally scatter the scallions on top. Chill until ready to serve. Garnish with a few cilantro sprigs and serve with baked chips.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Baked Mini Egg Rolls

I’m a big egg roll fan. And I think they’re great for parties. Generally, you can make them ahead of time, freeze them and reheat them. They’re not too messy. They’re filling. What’s not to love? This recipe from Vegeterian Times is even baked, so they’re not too horrible for your diet.

Baked Mini Egg Rolls & Hot Mustard Sauce

  • 1 T. soy sauce

  • 1 t. rice vinegar

  • 1 t. cornstarch, plus some extra for dusting baking sheets

  • 1 cup shredded cabbage

  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 T. minced fresh ginger

  • 1/4 cup sliced water chestnuts, drained and chopped

  • 1 cup frozen, shelled edamame, thawed

  • 2 T. finely chopped roasted peanuts

  • 1/2 t. dark sesame oil

  • 26 won ton skins

  • 1 large egg, slightly beaten

Whisk soy sauce, vinegar, and 1 t. cornstarch in bowl to blend; set aside.

Warm large nonstick skillet over med-high heat; coat with cooking spray. Add cabbage and carrots; cook, stirring, until cabbage is softened, 3-4 minutes. Add ingredients down to dark sesame oil, stirring just until heated, about 1 minute. Add cornstarch mixture; cook, stirring until thickened, about 1-2 minutes. Transfer to plate; cover, adn chill about 20 minutes to cool.

Place several won ton skins on work surface, with a corner of each facing you (in diamond shape). Brush top corner of each with egg. Put 1 T. filling in center of each; fold bottom corner, then both side corners over filling, and roll up. Place egg rolls on baking sheet dusted with cornstarch and cover loosely with plastic as you go.

Preheat oven to 425 F. Put second baking sheet in oven for 2 minutes. Remove, coat with cooking spray then quickly put egg rolls on it. Spray rolls and return to hot oven.

Bake 10 minutes, flip rolls and bake 10 minutes more, or until golden brown. Serve with mustard sauce (below).

Hot Mustard Sauce

  • 2 T. powdered yellow mustard

  • 1 T. water

  • 1 t. honey or rice syrup

  • 1 t. rice vinegar

Whisk all ingredients in bowl to blend. Transfer to dipping bowls.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks– Peanut Butter Brownie Cupcakess

Only have a few minutes to prepare something sweet for your Super Bowl party? This recipe from Food Network’s Paula Deen just takes five minutes and is delicious.

Peanut Butter Brownie Cupcakes

Peanut Butter Brownie Cupcakes Recipe courtesy Paula Deen
Show: Paula’s Home Cooking
Episode: Picnic in the Park

1 (18 1/2-ounce) package chewy fudge brownie mix (recommended: Duncan Hines)
1 (12-ounce) package peanut butter chips or 24 miniature peanut butter cups

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 24 regular muffin cups with paper cupcake liners.

Prepare the brownie mix according to package directions for cake-like brownies. Fill the cups half full with brownie batter. Place about 1 tablespoon peanut butter chips in the center of the batter, or press 1 peanut butter cup into the batter in each muffin cup until the batter meets the top edge of the peanut butter cup.

Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the cupcakes are set. When they can be handled safely, remove them from the muffin tins and let cool completely on wire racks. Store in an airtight container.

** If you have a few extra minutes, you could always make your own brownies, rather than using a mix.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Chili Blanco

Yes, I know, it’s another chili recipe. But can you really ever have too many chili recipes? And this one is Chili Blanco, or a white chili, and for some reason it’s much harder to find a vegetarian recipe for that kind of chili. And you can make this ahead and turn it into excellent nachos for you Super Bowl munching pleasure. Just put it on some tortilla chips with some diced tomatoes, cilantro, jalapenos and melted cheese and voila!— the perfect snack.

Chili Blanco

1 pound small navy beans, rinsed and drained
8 cups water
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 large yellow onions, coarsely chopped
6 cloves garlic, minced
6 cups Imagine Not Chicken broth (or some other kind of vegetable broth or stock)
1 large bay leaf
1 4 oz. can green chilis, chopped

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 cup each: chopped green bell pepper, celery and julienne carrots
1 teaspoon each: cumin (or more, to taste) and fresh ground black pepper
1 cup grated jack cheese
1/2 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped

2 cups baked tortilla chips, coarsely crushed (you can leave this out if you’re making the chili for nachos)
5 green onions, sliced (white and green parts)
sour cream, optional

Place the beans in a large pot and cover with the 8 cups of water. Bring to a boil and cook for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let set, covered for 1 hour. Drain. Alternately, you can soak the beans overnight.

Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. When hot, sauté the onions until golden. Add the garlic and sauté 1-2 minutes, until garlic is translucent, but not browned.

Combine the beans, onions, broth, and bay leaf in a 6 quart pot. Bring to a low simmer, cover and cook until tender. Stir in green chilies and mash with a potato masher OR cool the mixture and puree it briefly in a blender or food processor. You want it to remain chunky, so don’t puree it too much. Season to taste with salt. When the beans are tender, sauté the bell pepper, celery, carrots, cumin and black pepper until just cooked. Stir into the beans after mashing. Add cheese and cilantro, stirring to blend. Serve garnished with green onions, chips and sour cream, if desired.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Chicago-Style Pizza

If you’re rooting for Da Bears next weekend, then there’s no better dish for you to serve than a Chicago-style Pizza. And, since it’s pizza, you can put whatever toppings on it that you like. If you want to try something a bit different than this recipe, you can find a great recipe for a stuffed Chicago-style pizza on fellow-blogger Andrea’s site.

For just the basics, use this recipe and add whatever toppings you find appealing.

Chicago-style Pizza

1 (.25 ounce) envelope rapid rise yeast
2 cups lukewarm water
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 cup cornmeal
5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 pound sliced mozzarella cheese

1 can pizza sauce (or make your own)

Topping suggestions: Peppers, onions, pineapple, olives, spinach, zucchini, soy meat substitute

3 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
3 tablespoons olive oil

Place the water in a mixing bowl of a stand mixer. Sprinkle the yeast over the water, and let stand for 5 minutes to dissolve. Pour in the vegetable oil, olive oil, cornmeal and 3 cups of the flour. Mix with the beater for 10 minutes. Add the remaining flour, and switch from the beater to the dough hook. Mix for about 5 minutes. This can be done by hand, but the dough is very rich and moist. Pour the dough out onto a floured surface, and cover with a large bowl. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Punch down the dough, and let rise again. This time won’t take as long.

Preheat the oven to 475 degrees F (245 degrees C).

Grease two 9 or 10 inch round cake pans. Divide the dough evenly between the two pans. Press the dough out so that it goes all the way up the sides of the pans. Lay the slices of mozzarella cheese onto the crusts like tile. Next put the pizza sauce over the mozzarella. This is the time to add your toppings. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top, and drizzle with olive oil.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, until the top is golden and gooey, and the crust a light golden brown.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Black Bean and Chocolate Chili

I’m not waiting for the Super Bowl to make this chili. I’m planning to make it for dinner this week. Chocolate in chili? Sound absurd? Not at all. It gives the chili a nice depth that vegetarian chili can sometimes lack. I’ve never used semi-sweet chocolate pieces, opting instead for cocoa. If you prefer using cocoa, you can always just add a little extra oil.

This recipe comes from one of my favorite cookbooks, Moosewood Restaurant Celebrates. My first vegetarian cookbook was Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant, and I’ve bought several other Moosewood cookbooks since then. I highly recommend any of them. I like that they’re a bit chatty about the recipes. I also like that this particular cookbook arranges things by event. So, if you need a recipe for a birthday breakfast in bed, you can flip to that section and have a whole menu laid out for you.

Anyway, enough about the cookbook and on to the recipe.

Black Bean and Chocolate Chili

2 T. vegetable oil
1 1/2 c. chopped onions
4 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
1 celery stalk, thinly sliced
1 small fresh chile, minced
1 T. ground cumin
2 t. dried oregano
1/2 t. ground cinnamon
pinch of ground cloves (I’m leaving those out, not being a huge clove fan)
1 t. ground coriander
1/2 t. ground black pepper
1/2 t. salt (I’ll probably use more like 1 t.)
1 1/2 c. chopped bell peppers
3 c. cooked or canned black beans (2- 14.5 oz. cans, rinsed and drained)
2 c. undrained crushed canned tomatoes (one 14.5 oz. can)
1 T. fresh lemon juice
1 T. soy sauce
1 1/2 oz semi-sweet chocolate, broken into small pieces (or you could use about a 1/4 c. chocolate chips)
chopped scallions

In a saucepan, warm the oil on medium heat. Add the onions ad garlic and saute until the onions become translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the celery and chile, cover, and cook for about 5 minutes.

Reduce the heat and stir in the spices and bell peppers. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, until the bell peppers begin to soften. Stir occasionally to keep the spices from burning. If needed, add a little juice from the canned tomatoes.

Add the black beans, tomatoes, lemon juice and soy sauce. Bring the chili to a simmer, cover, and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Stir in the chocolate. When it is melted, adjust the salt, black pepper and lemon juice to taste.

Garnish with chopped scallions.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Spicy Sour Cream Dip

Tired of the same old french onion dip? This dip from the Food Network will add a little heat to your party.

Spicy Sour Cream Dip

1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 chipotle chile in adobo, chopped
1 teaspoon abobo sauce
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro leaves
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1/4 teaspoon salt

In a bowl, combine all the ingredients. Adjust the seasoning, to taste. Refrigerate, covered, until ready to serve. Serve with tortilla chips or veggies.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–“Chicken” Parmesan Heroes

Do you need more than snacks to satisfy your hunger on Super Bowl Sunday? These eggplant heros be good.) This recipe is super easy, as it’s really more assembling than cooking.

Chicken Parmesan Hero Sandwich

2 jars marinara sauce
2 packages prepared soy chicken breaded patties (approx. 8 patties)
4 (12-inch-long) loaves Italian bread, halved lengthwise
1 lb mozzarella, thinly sliced

Preheat oven to 400 F.

Microwave or heat soy chicken patties according to directions on the box. Cut in half.

Arrange bottom halves of bread loaves on a large baking sheet and tops on another large baking sheet, all with cut sides up. Spread 1/4 cup marinara on each top and bottom. Divide soy chicken patties between bottom halves. Top each (open-faced) sandwich with 1/4 cup marinara and one fourth of mozzarella.

Bake open-faced sandwiches in lower third of oven until cheese melts, about 3 minutes. When cheese begins to melt, put tops of loaves in upper third of oven and bake until edges are golden, 3 to 4 minutes (watch tops closely; they burn easily). Put tops on bottoms to make sandwiches, then slice into serving pieces.

Vegetarian Super Bowl Snacks–Potato Skins with Ricotta-Sundried Tomato Dip

This recipe comes from a great cookbook: The Golden Door Cookbook. The Golden Door Cookbook is based on foods served at the Golden Door Spa in southern California. The recipes are interesting and unique and delicious. BUT they tend to be more gourmet. By that I mean that they usually have extensive ingredient lists and aren’t always the simplest recipes to make. This recipe is an exception to that. While it does have a fairly long ingredient list, it is pretty simple to assemble. If you like, the dip could be prepared alone and served with potato chips or some other “dipper”.

Potato Skins with Ricotta-Sundried Tomato Dip

Dip

2 T. sliced, soaked dry-packed sundried tomatoes (these are the sundried tomatoes that come in a bag, rather than packed in oil— see note on soaking at bottom of recipe*)
1 T. reserved tomato soaking water
3/4 cup low-fat ricotta cheese
1 T. minced shallots
1 T. balsamic vinegar
1 t. dried basil
1/4 t. freshly ground pepper

In a food processor, combine the tomatoes, reserved soaking water, ricotta, shallots, vinegar, basil and pepper and process until smooth. Transfer to a bowl, cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Let come to room temperature before serving.

*To rehydrate dry-packed sundried tomatoes, soak them in warm water to cover for 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and slice. Be sure to reserve 1 T. of the soaking water for the recipe.

Potato Skins

About 20 sprigs fresh rosemary
2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes
1 t. chili powder
1 t. ground cumin
1 t. paprika
1/2 t. celery salt
4 russet potatoes, scrubbed (a little over 2 1/2 lbs.)

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Spread the rosemary sprigs on a rimmed baking sheet.

In a small bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients, except the potatoes. Set aside.

Using a small, sharp knife, slice off a 1/4 inch thick slice from all four sides of each potato. (Save the peeled potatoes for another use.) Blot the cut sides of the potato skins dry with paper towels and arrange them, skin sides down, on the rosemary. Sprinkle the cut sides evenly with the spice mixture. Spray with vegetable oil spray, or brush with olive oil.

Bake for about 20 minutes, remove from the oven, and spray with the vegetable oil spray again (or brush again with olive oil). Return to the oven and continue baking for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and beginning to puff. Serve with the dip.

Making Windows Xp Start 60% Faster, tutorial…

Making Windows Xp Start 60% Faster, tutorial…

Making Windows Xp Start 60% Faster, tutorial…

Whenever you start your computer, you are faced with a few moments of thumb twiddling while Windows XP boots and prompts you to log on. Although you should expect to wait for a few moments, sometimes Windows XP seems to boot rather slowly. In fact, you may notice that over a period of time the PC that used to roar to life seems a bit sluggish instead. Fortunately, you can perform several techniques that help Windows XP get the bootup speed you want. This chapter explores how to put these techniques to work.

Stopping Unneeded Startup Services

Along with the core operating system and programs that Windows XP runs when it starts, there is also a host of services involved. Many of these services are necessary for Windows XP to operate correctly. However, many of them are for features in Windows XP that you may not use at all. You can peruse the services and disable any service that you do not want to run. The fewer services that run, the more quickly Windows XP will boot.

Caution:
Exercise caution when stopping services. If you do not know what a service does or are unsure of the ramifications of stopping the service, leave it alone. Some services are critical to Windows XP’s operations, so make sure you understand what the service is before you disable it.

To reduce the number of services that start on bootup, you can access two different areas of Windows XP. The first is the System Configuration Utility. The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer boots.

You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box next to the service and clicking OK. However, before you do so, there is another way to disable services that you may prefer because the interface gives you more information about the service in question.

Open Control Panel/Administrative ToolsServices or else select Start/Run, type services.msc, and click OK. Either way, you see the Services console.

I prefer to use the Services console instead of the System Configuration Utility because it describes what the service does. Additionally, you can double-click a service and examine its properties.

Notice the Startup Type column in Figure 4-2. This information lists whether the service is automatic or manual. Manual services are only started in Windows XP when you start a process that requires the service. Some other process may require the service that has a “dependency” relationship with it; in this case, the dependency service will start, as well. Because these services do not start automatically when you boot Windows XP, you do not need to do anything with manual services.

However, all services listed as automatic start when Windows XP boots. These are the services that increase boot time. As I have mentioned, many of them are necessary and important, so you should not stop automatic services from booting unless you are sure of the ramifications. You can get this information by looking at the Description column. Here’s a quick look at common services you may want to live without:

Automatic Updates: This service enables Windows XP to check the Web automatically for updates. If you don’t want to use Automatic Updates, you can disable the service. You can always check for updates manually at the Windows Update Web site.

Computer Browser: If your computer is not on a network, you don’t need this service. If you are on a network, leave it alone.

DHCP Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service. If you are on a small workgroup, you can still increase boot time by configuring manual IP addresses (which I explore later in this chapter).

DNS Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service. If you are, leave it alone.

Error Reporting and Event Log: You don’t have to use these services but they can be very helpful, so I would leave them configured as automatic.

Fax: If you don’t use your computer for fax services, you can disable this one.

Help and Support: If you never use the Windows XP Help and Support Center (found on the Start menu), you can disable this service.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM: This service enables you to burn CDs on your computer. If you never burn CDs, you can disable the service.

Indexing Service: Your computer keeps an index of files but if you rarely search for files, the service is just a resource hog. You can stop it and turn the service to manual.

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing: If you do not use these features, you can disable them.

Infrared Monitor: If you do not use infrared devices, you can disable this service.

Messenger: This service sends alert messages on a local area network (it is not the same as Windows Messenger). If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

Print Spooler: If you do not do any printing from the computer, you can disable this service. If you print, make sure you leave it as automatic.

Remote Registry: This service allows remote users to modify the Registry on your computer. If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

System Restore Service: This service allows you to use System Restore. If you have turned off System Restore anyway, you do not need to turn off the service. If you do, you turn off System Restore.

Themes: If you do not use themes, you can disable this service.

Windows Image Acquisition: If you do not use scanners or digital cameras, you can disable this service.

Wireless Zero Configuration: If do not use wireless networking devices, you can disable this service.

You may have a number of other automatic services, depending on software and other configurations on your computer. So it’s a good idea to look through the services and learn more about them. If you double-click a service, a Properties dialog box appears

Notice that on the General tab, you see a Startup Type drop-down menu. If you want to change an automatic service to manual, select Manual here and click OK. As a general rule, don’t disable a service unless you are sure you will never use it. However, manual configuration allows the service to be started when you find it necessary, thus speeding up your boot time.

However, before you change a service to manual, look at the Dependencies tab (see Figure 4-4). This tab shows you which other services depend upon the service you are considering changing.

Keep in mind that services are necessary for the vast functionality you get with Windows XP. Change only those services that you understand and do not use. How you use your Windows XP computer should be the best guide in terms of optional startup services.

follow these steps carefully...............

1. First in the URL bar, Type "about:config". This will bring up a list of commands and variables you can edit

2. The second step is to put "network.http.pipelining" in the filter and change the value to "true".

3. After that you will want to put "network.http.proxy.pipelining" in the filter.
Like the last one, make that value set to "true" also.

4. Next, locate "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" and change the value to some number higher, say 10,20 or even 30, it would make up to 10,20 or 30 requests at once.

5. The last step is to right click anywhere and select "New" then "Integer". Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and make its value "0". This will make the browser respond faster on the information of the websites it receives.

A HIDDEN FIREWALL THAT SLOWS YOUR DOWNLOAD

ONLY IF U HAVE WINDOWS XP

Go Start>Control Panel>select Switch to Classic view
then

Open up your “Network Connections”. Right click on your internet connection or LAN connection and select “Properties”.

->Select the “Advance” tab

If the “Internet Connection Firewall” is ticked then this might be the reason for slow downloads. Also it might be the reason for the status light to stay yellow, even though you have allowed your current firewall to allow your client to access the internet. Try it out and tell me if that was the problem, beacuse it was mine.

Sharing Files Between Windows XP and Mac OS X

Using an Ethernet connection and File Sharing
To share files on a Windows XP computer and a Mac OS X computer, you can enable File Sharing to create a common folder accessible on both computers.

On Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.3 Panther:

4- Click to check Allow user to log in from Windows
5- Click OK

6- Click System Preferences - Sharing
7- Click to check Personal File Sharing
8- Click to check Windows File Sharing
9- Note your Mac's IP address at the bottom of the window (in the paragraph reading "Windows users can access your computer at (address).
To choose which Windows users can log in, open Accounts preferences and edit their user information."

On Windows XP:
1- Click on Start - Search
2- Click on Computers or people - A computer on the network
3- Enter the Mac's IP address that you noted above
4- Enter your OS X username and password

Set up a shared folder on XP:

Your shared XP folder now appears on the Mac desktop, allowing you to copy files from XP or OS X to the folder and retrieve them on the other computer.

How to fix the slow file transfers problem in Vista

When moving from Windows XP to Vista, I noticed that file transfers were much slower. Fortunately, I kept my old operating system too, but that's not a solution - to use Windows XP every time you have to transfer large files from a partition to another. So... how do we fix this issue?

Since the cause of slow file operations in vista is Remote Differential Compression, we have to disable this feature. This is how to do it...

Press the Start Orb.
Open the Control Panel.
Go to the Programs and Programs and features applet.
Select Turn on or off Windows features in the left pane.
Here, uncheck Remote Differential Compression.

Now, it's done! File copy and move operations will be much faster.

How to uninstall a program in windows vista

To remove a software, just click on the Start orb, go to Control Panel and choose Uninstall a program. Here there’s a list with programs that you can uninstall, each containing information about the Publisher (who made the software), when was the software installed and the size of it. Click on the application you want to remove and select Uninstall.

What you should know when uninstalling a program

There are some things you should now before or after uninstalling a software:

For safety reasons, you should log off every user (except the administrator) on the computer before uninstalling a software
Some of the programs are not completely uninstalled and they can leave some traces behind. My suggestion is to find out where the remaining file are and erase them (usually in Program Files or Documents)
You can only uninstall a program from Control Panel if it was originally installed with a Windows compatible setup program. Otherwise, you would have to manually delete the files, folders and the shortcuts

Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain

Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain

The brain is a fearsomely complex information-processing environment–one that often eludes our ability to understand it. At any given time, the brain is collecting, filtering, and analyzing information and, in response, performing countless intricate processes, some of which are automatic, some voluntary, some conscious, and some unconscious.

Cognitive neuroscience is one of the ways we have to understand the workings of our minds. It’s the study of the brain biology behind our mental functions: a collection of methods–like brain scanning and computational modeling–combined with a way of looking at psychological phenomena and discovering where, why, and how the brain makes them happen. Want to know more? Mind Hacks is a collection of probes into the moment-by-moment works of the brain. Using cognitive neuroscience, these experiments, tricks, and tips related to vision, motor skills, attention, cognition, subliminal perception, and more throw light on how the human brain works. Each hack examines specific operations of the brain. By seeing how the brain responds, we pick up clues about the architecture and design of the brain, learning a little bit more about how the brain is put together. Mind Hacks begins your exploration of the mind with a look inside the brain itself, using hacks such as “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: Turn On and Off Bits of the Brain” and “Tour the Cortex and the Four Lobes.” Also among the 100 hacks in this book, you’ll find:

-Release Eye Fixations for Faster Reactions
-See Movement When All is Still
-Feel the Presence and Loss of Attention
-Detect Sounds on the Margins of Certainty
-Mold Your Body Schema
-Test Your Handedness
-See a Person in Moving Lights
-Make Events Understandable as Cause-and-Effect
-Boost Memory by Using Context
-Understand Detail and the Limits of Attention

Steven Johnson, author of “Mind Wide Open” writes in his foreword to the book, “These hacks amaze because they reveal the brain’s hidden logic; they shed light on the cheats and shortcuts and latent assumptions our brains make about the world.” If you want to know more about what’s going on in your head, then Mind Hacks is the key–let yourself play with the interface between you and the world.
